What a website quote is actually made of
A website quote bundles eight or nine separate things, and most owners in Kerala are only shown the total. Before you compare two quotes, split each one into its parts.
- Design – the layout, colours, type, and how each page is arranged on a phone. On a template site this is close to free; on a custom site it is a real share of the bill.
- Build – turning the design into working pages, a form, a WhatsApp button, a map, and whatever else you asked for.
- Content – the words. Someone has to write the service pages, the about page and the Malayalam versions if you want them. Many quotes assume you will supply the text, and the site then waits months for it.
- Photos – your premises, your team, your products. Stock photos cost nothing and look like it.
- Domain, hosting and SSL – the address, the server and the padlock. Small money, paid every year, and worth holding in your own name.
- Set-up of the free tools – Google Business Profile, Search Console, analytics, Tag Manager. No fees, but hours of work to do properly.
- Maintenance and renewals – updates, backups, small edits, and the renewals that arrive whether or not anyone reminds you.
Two suppliers can quote very different totals for the same site simply because one includes the writing, the photography and the set-up, and the other assumes you will handle them. Ask for the split before you compare the totals.
Three kinds of supplier in Kerala, and why their quotes differ ten-fold
Ask five people in Ernakulam district for a website quote and the highest figure can be ten times the lowest. That is not one of them cheating you. They are selling different things.
The freelancer
Often a student or a developer with a day job, working evenings. Low overhead, so a low price. The risk is not skill but continuity: when they take a full-time post in Bengaluru or the Gulf, nobody is left who knows how your site was built.
The template shop
A small firm that installs a purchased theme, swaps in your logo and text, and delivers in a week. Fast and cheap because the same theme serves fifty clients. The price arrives later, as weight: page builders and plugins that load slowly on a 4G phone in Muvattupuzha, and a design that looks like the shop two doors down.
The agency
Designs the site around the enquiries you want, writes the pages, sets up tracking, and stays around afterwards. The quote covers people’s time rather than a theme licence, so it is the highest of the three. Whether that is worth it depends on what an enquiry is worth to you. A builder or a clinic loses more from a slow, unfindable site than a hobby shop does.
None of these is the wrong choice. The wrong choice is paying agency money for template-shop work, which happens whenever nobody asks what is inside the quote.
One-off cost versus the yearly bill
The build is paid once. Everything below is paid again every year or on every order, and it is the part most quotes leave out. These are published third-party prices we checked on 7 October 2026. They change, so treat them as the order of magnitude, not a quote.
| Item | Published price | How often | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| .in domain | ₹1 for the first year, then ₹899 a year | Yearly | Hostinger |
| .com domain | ₹1 for the first year, then ₹1,499 a year | Yearly | Hostinger |
| Shared hosting, entry plan | ₹69 a month on a 48-month term, renewing at ₹289 a month; SSL included | Paid up front, then at renewal | Hostinger |
| Static hosting, CDN and SSL | Free. Cloudflare’s Free plan covers SSL, CDN and DDoS protection; Pages allows 500 builds a month | Never | Cloudflare |
| Shopify plan | Basic ₹1,994 a month, or ₹1,499 a month when paid yearly | Monthly | Shopify India |
| Payment gateway | 2% per successful domestic transaction plus GST; no set-up or annual fee | Per order | Razorpay |
| Business email | Zoho Mail’s free plan covers up to 5 users with 5 GB each; Google Workspace is priced per user per month | Monthly | Zoho, Google |
| Google Business Profile, Search Console | Free | Never |
Two things to notice. The ₹1 domain and the ₹69 hosting are first-term prices; the renewal is the real number, and it arrives once you are no longer watching. And a Shopify store carries a plan fee, a gateway fee and, because Shopify Payments is not offered in India, Shopify’s own transaction fee as well: 2% on the Basic plan.
What pushes a Kerala business site up the scale
Within any one supplier’s range, these are the decisions that move the figure. Each is a real piece of work, so expect each to appear as its own line.
- Malayalam pages. A second language doubles the writing and adds a set of URLs that search engines index on their own. A translation widget is cheaper and is not the same thing: Google indexes the text your server sends, not what a script swaps in afterwards.
- E-commerce. Products, variants, stock, shipping rules, returns, GST invoices and a gateway. The number of products matters less than how clean your product data is when you hand it over.
- Bookings. A clinic or a salon needs slots, confirmations and reminders. That is either a paid booking tool or custom work.
- WhatsApp. A click-to-chat button costs nothing. An assistant that answers within minutes, qualifies the enquiry and hands it to your staff runs on the WhatsApp Business Platform, where Meta charges per template message delivered and replies inside the 24-hour service window are free.
- Speed. Passing Google’s page-speed thresholds on a mid-range Android over 4G means fewer scripts, compressed images and a lighter build. It is cheaper to design in than to retrofit.
- SEO set-up. Title tags, one page per service, schema, a sitemap, Search Console, a map embed, your address in the footer. None of it is exotic; all of it takes time.
- Photography. Half a day with a photographer in your shop. The line on the quote that pays back most.
What a cheap site costs you later
The cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest site. These are the bills that arrive in year two, and none of them appear on the first invoice.
- You do not own the domain. It was registered in the developer’s account, under their email. When they stop answering, you cannot renew it or move it, and your Google profile and your printed signboard point at a dead address. Check whose name is on the registrar login before you pay anything.
- Slow pages. A theme with a page builder and twenty plugins can take several seconds to appear on a phone in Perumbavoor. Visitors leave, and the enquiry goes to the next listing.
- Template SEO. Every page titled “Home – Your Company Name”, a single services page that lists everything, and no Malayalam. It ranks for your own name and nothing else.
- No measurement. No analytics, no Search Console, no call or WhatsApp tracking. A year later you cannot say whether the site brought one enquiry or a hundred, so you cannot decide whether to spend on ads.
- Rebuilding. When the first site cannot be fixed, you pay for a second one and lose whatever search history the first had gathered.
Put two quotes side by side with these in mind and the gap usually shrinks. Our earlier guide to what a Kerala small-business site needs lists the five things to insist on.
Ten questions to ask before you pay a deposit
Send these to every supplier in writing. The answers tell you more than the total does.
- Who owns the domain and hosting, and will the registrar and hosting logins be in my name and my email?
- Is the quote for a template or a design made for us, and may I see the template if so?
- Who writes the text, and in which languages? Is Malayalam included or extra?
- Are photographs included, or will stock images be used?
- What is the page-speed score on a phone, and will you show me the result for a page you built this year?
- Will Google Business Profile, Search Console, analytics and Tag Manager be set up and handed to me as the owner?
- Does the quote include GST, and what is paid up front versus on launch?
- What happens after launch: how many edits a month, what does an extra page cost, and who do I message when something breaks?
- What renews each year, at what price, and will I be told before it renews?
- If we part ways, what do I get: the files, the database, the admin logins, and a written hand-over?
A supplier who answers all ten without hesitation is the one to hire, whatever their price. A supplier who skips question one is the one to avoid, whatever their price. Our guide to choosing a marketing agency in Kerala covers the same ground for ads and SEO.
When Shopify is the right call, and when it is not
Shopify is the question we are asked most often by owners in Ernakulam district who sell products. The honest answer depends on three things.
Choose Shopify when you have more than a handful of products, stock that changes, customers across India, and you want someone else to worry about security, uptime and checkout. The plan fee is published and predictable: Shopify India lists the Basic plan at ₹1,994 a month, or ₹1,499 a month when paid yearly, after a three-day free trial and three months at ₹20. Grow and Advanced cost more and cut the transaction fee.
Count the full cost before you decide. Shopify Payments is not available in India, so you connect a gateway such as Razorpay, which charges 2% per successful domestic transaction plus GST. Shopify then adds its own third-party-provider fee: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced. Add paid apps for reviews, GST invoicing or WhatsApp notifications. On a ₹500 product the fees are small; on thin margins they are not.
Choose a custom site when you sell a service, take bookings, or have a few products you can sell over WhatsApp. A fast static site with a click-to-chat button and a payment link carries no monthly plan and no app subscriptions. Our guides to Shopify set-up in India and e-commerce set-up in Kothamangalam go deeper.
How we quote, and why there is no price list
We publish no package prices for websites, and this article will not give you one. That is a decision, not coyness, and the reasoning helps you read other quotes too.
A price list only works when the product is the same for everyone. A website is not. A ten-page bilingual site for a Kothamangalam builder, with a page per registered project carrying its K-RERA number, and a three-page site for an Aluva tuition centre with a booking form, share almost nothing except the domain renewal. Any figure we printed would be wrong for one of them.
So the sequence is this. We come to your shop or office – Kothamangalam on foot, Muvattupuzha to Kochi by car, Monday to Saturday – and run a free audit: what you sell, what an enquiry is worth, what your current site and Google profile are doing, and what people near you actually search for. You then get a written scope listing every page, every language, every integration and every renewal, with one figure against it. No lock-in contract, and the domain, hosting and every account stay in your name.
If the figure is too high, you keep the scope and can take it to anyone. It is the split from the first section of this article, filled in for your business, and it is the most useful thing to hold before you talk to a second supplier.
The short version
There is no single website cost in Kerala, and anyone who gives you one before asking questions is quoting a template. The figure is driven by who builds it, what is inside the quote, and what recurs. The recurring parts are small and public: a .in domain renews at under a thousand rupees a year, shared hosting at a few hundred a month, a Shopify Basic plan at about two thousand a month, a gateway at around 2% per order. The one-off part is where quotes diverge ten-fold, and the ten questions above are how you close that gap.
If you are in Ernakulam district or Idukki, our Kothamangalam web design page and Kochi web design page explain how we build, what the audit covers, and how to book one.
