Pala trains Kerala's future doctors and engineers. Who trains its marketers?

Few towns of Pala's size have this many classrooms. St. Thomas College has taught here since 1950, and its courses include B.Com and BCA. Alphonsa College at Arunapuram is a women's college affiliated to MG University. SJCET at Choondacherry runs engineering, MBA and MCA programmes, and IIIT Kottayam has its campus at Valavoor, just outside town.

Then there is entrance coaching. Mutholy, on Pala's edge, is home to one of Kerala's best-known coaching centres. A Dhanam profile of Brilliant Study Centre counts around 155 hostels near its campus, along with the shops and eateries that grew up to serve its students. Those students come from all over Kerala. For a hostel owner in Mutholy, the customer may well be a parent who lives hours away, or in another country.

The money underneath is older. Kottayam district's official profile says most of India's natural rubber comes from Kottayam's plantations, and the district is home to the Rubber Board. Pala sits in that rubber country, and plantation and trading income runs through its shops and family firms.

What Pala lacks is a place to learn marketing the way it is done now: with AI tools, automation and live ad accounts. The usual answer has been to move to Kochi for a course. We think learning online from home, with a working agency behind the course, makes more sense.

Whose customers live in Pala, and whose live in London or the Gulf?

Kottayam district sends many of its young people abroad. The Kerala Migration Survey 2023, as reported by The South First, counted about 35,382 student emigrants from Kottayam, the third-highest of any Kerala district after Ernakulam and Thrissur. That changes who a Pala business is really selling to. Often the person deciding is not in Pala at all.

Can you commute from Pala to the campus?

Not comfortably, and we'd rather say so now. You would be heading for Nellikuzhi, just outside Kothamangalam town, where the campus is close to the Indira Gandhi Institute of Dental Sciences (IGIDS). From Pala there are two sensible routes. One goes north through Ramapuram to Koothattukulam, then along the MC Road to Muvattupuzha and on to Kothamangalam. The other goes through Thodupuzha and then Muvattupuzha. Either way, it is roughly 50–60 km.

By car or bike it takes a little over an hour in normal traffic. By bus, journey planners put it at about two and a half hours, with a change at Muvattupuzha. KSRTC runs frequent services between Pala and Thodupuzha, and the Muvattupuzha–Kothamangalam road is well served too. Still, twice a week by bus, that is about five hours on the road for a class of two and a half hours.

So our advice for Pala is simple: join online. You attend the same live sessions as campus students, with a trainer you can question in real time. Every session is recorded and shared within 24 hours. Come to the campus when it is worth the trip, for example a Saturday session or a day during your internship month.
