Agentic SEO and GEO
How AI agents get your business found on Google and ChatGPT

Search is splitting in two. People still type queries into Google, but more and more they also ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity — and read the answer instead of clicking a link. This guide explains agentic SEO and GEO in plain English, shows what an SEO agent actually does, and gives Kerala businesses a checklist they can copy.

Agentic SEO is SEO run by an AI agent that works continuously instead of in one-off monthly batches. The agent audits your pages, finds content gaps, drafts briefs, fixes schema, and monitors both your Google rankings and your mentions in AI answers — and it keeps doing this in the background, flagging what a human needs to approve.

Traditional SEO is usually a monthly cycle. Someone runs an audit, writes a report, picks a few pages to improve, publishes some content, and then waits until next month to look again. It works, but it is slow, and small problems — a broken schema tag, a page that has quietly slipped in rankings, a new competitor answer — can sit undetected for weeks.

An SEO agent changes the rhythm. Because it is software, it can check your site every day, compare today against yesterday, and act on small changes before they become big ones. The human role shifts from doing every task by hand to setting the strategy, reviewing the agent's findings, and approving the important changes. The agent handles the repetitive monitoring and the first drafts; the person handles judgement.

This is the same shift happening across digital marketing — from tools that wait for you to click, to agents that take a goal and carry out the steps. If you are new to that idea, our plain-English guide to agentic AI explains the foundation, and our agentic AI for digital marketing guide covers where it fits across a whole marketing stack.

What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, is the practice of getting your business named and cited inside AI-generated answers — the responses you get from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews. Where classic SEO asks "are we ranking for this keyword?", GEO asks "when someone asks an AI about our topic, does it mention us?"

The important idea in GEO is AI Share of Voice. Instead of only tracking your position in a list of links, you measure how often your brand is cited inside AI answers compared to your competitors. If a Kochi customer asks ChatGPT "which institutes teach AI automation near Ernakulam?", AI Share of Voice is the measure of how often your name shows up in that answer over many similar questions.

This matters because AI answers often satisfy the user without a click. The person reads the response and moves on. If your brand is not inside the answer, you were effectively invisible for that query — even if you rank on page one of the traditional results. GEO is about being present in the answer itself, not just in the link list underneath it.

Question SEO answers GEO answers
Where does it show up? The blue-link results on Google and Bing Inside AI answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews
What is measured? Keyword rankings, clicks, impressions AI Share of Voice — how often you are cited in answers
What wins? Relevant, well-structured pages with authority The same, plus clear facts AI can extract and corroborate
How is it tracked? Rank trackers and search analytics AI-answer monitoring across common prompts

You will sometimes also see the term AEO (Answer Engine Optimization). In practice AEO and GEO overlap heavily — both are about being the source an answer engine trusts and quotes. We treat GEO as the broader term that includes AEO.

What an SEO agent actually does, step by step

An SEO agent is not magic. It is a sequence of well-defined steps, each one automated and repeated on a schedule. Here is the workflow a well-built SEO agent runs, from research to ongoing maintenance.

1
SERP and answer analysis

The agent looks at what already ranks for a target topic on Google, and what AI tools currently say when asked about it. This shows the standard the page has to meet and which sources the answer engines are trusting today.

2
Content gap detection

It compares your existing pages against those top results and lists what is missing — questions you have not answered, subtopics you have not covered, and pages competitors have that you do not.

3
Brief creation

For each gap, the agent drafts a content brief: the target question, the sections to include, the entities to mention, and the internal links to add. A human reviews the brief before anything is written.

4
Drafting

The agent produces a first draft from the approved brief. This is a starting point, not a finished page — a person edits it for accuracy, local context, and voice before it goes near publication.

5
Schema and technical markup

It generates and validates structured data — Article, FAQ, Breadcrumb, LocalBusiness — so search engines and AI systems can understand the page precisely. Broken or missing schema is one of the most common things an agent catches.

6
Publish and submit

After human approval, the page is published and submitted for indexing so search engines discover it quickly rather than waiting for the next crawl.

7
Monitor decay and AI citations

The agent keeps watching. It tracks whether rankings hold, whether pages lose traffic over time (content decay), and whether the brand is being cited in AI answers. When something slips, it flags a refresh — and the cycle starts again.

Notice that a human sits at steps 3, 4, and 6. The agent removes the grind — the constant checking, comparing, and drafting — but it does not remove accountability. This is the model we teach and practise: agents for the repetitive work, people for the judgement.

Does normal SEO still matter for AI search?

Yes. Standard SEO best practices still apply to AI search. Google's own guidance says the same fundamentals that help you in normal search — helpful content, good technical health, and a strong page experience — also help you appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode. GEO is SEO plus visibility monitoring, not a separate dark art.

This is reassuring for any Kerala business that has already invested in SEO. The work you have done — clear pages, fast loading, sensible site structure, honest information — is the same foundation AI search rewards. AI systems are trained and grounded on the open web, so a page that is well made for people and readable by search engines is also readable by an answer engine.

Google's guidance, plainly: there is no separate secret checklist for AI Overviews. Google states that standard SEO best practices continue to apply to its AI experiences. GEO adds one thing on top — measuring and monitoring whether AI answers actually mention you — but the groundwork is ordinary, well-done SEO.

What changes is the emphasis. Because AI answers pull facts and quote passages, clarity and structure matter even more. A page that states a fact plainly in a short paragraph is easier for an AI to lift and cite than the same fact buried in a long, meandering section. Consistent information across your site and the wider web also matters, because AI systems favour facts they can corroborate from more than one source.

How we make our own site AI-readable

We do not just teach this — we apply it to our own site. AI Automation School by Beeps Digital is based in Kothamangalam, in Ernakulam district, Kerala, and everything below is a practice we implement on our own pages so that both Google and AI systems can understand who we are and what we teach.

llms.txt. We maintain an llms.txt file that gives AI systems a short, plain-language summary of the school and points to our most important pages. It is a small file, but it makes our site easier for an AI to read at a glance.

Crawler access for AI. We check our robots.txt so that reputable AI crawlers are allowed to read the pages we want cited. If a crawler is blocked, the AI system cannot use your content — so we make sure the door is open for the ones that matter.

Entity statements. We state clearly, in plain sentences, who we are, where we are, and what we offer. Naming the organisation, the town, the district, and the state in ordinary prose helps AI systems connect the facts confidently.

Structured schema. Every important page carries validated structured data — Article, FAQ, Breadcrumb, and LocalBusiness markup — so machines read the page the way we intend, not by guessing.

Citable passages. We write short, direct answers to real questions, and we use callout blocks for the facts we most want quoted. A clean, self-contained sentence is far easier for an AI to lift into an answer than a claim wrapped in three paragraphs.

Why local context helps: Kochi's Infopark is home to 582 companies and around 72,000 IT professionals, and IBM opened its Generative AI Innovation Center there in 2024. Naming verifiable local anchors like this — clearly and honestly — is exactly the kind of corroborated, specific context that makes a page more citable for both search engines and AI answers.

We do not claim guaranteed results from any of this, and neither should you. What we can say is that these are sound, low-risk practices that make a site legible to modern search — and they are the same practices we walk students through in class.

GEO checklist for a Kerala business website

Here is a practical, eight-point checklist any Kerala business can work through to improve its visibility in both Google and AI search. Start at the top — the early items give the biggest return for the least effort.

  • Answer real questions directly. For each important page, open with a two-to-three sentence answer to the exact question a customer would ask. Make it self-contained enough to quote.
  • Keep your NAP consistent. Use the same business name, address, and phone number on your site, Google Business Profile, and every directory. AI systems trust facts that agree across sources.
  • Add structured data. Mark up your pages with LocalBusiness, FAQ, Article, and Breadcrumb schema, and validate it. This is the single most reliable way to be understood by machines.
  • Allow AI crawlers. Check robots.txt so reputable AI crawlers can read the pages you want cited. Blocked pages cannot appear in AI answers.
  • Publish an llms.txt file. Add a short llms.txt at your site root that summarises who you are and links your key pages. It is low effort and helps AI understand your site.
  • State your location and specialism in plain words. Name your town, district, and state in ordinary sentences on your main pages, alongside what you actually do.
  • Earn genuine mentions. Real references from local news, associations, and partners give AI systems the corroboration they look for. Avoid spammy link schemes.
  • Monitor and refresh. Track your rankings and, where you can, whether AI tools mention you. Update pages that slip. GEO is ongoing, not one-and-done.

None of these require an SEO agent to begin — you can do them by hand. An agent simply lets you run the monitoring and refreshing steps continuously instead of occasionally, which is where much of the compounding value comes from.

Frequently Asked Questions

SEO (search engine optimization) is about ranking your web pages in a list of blue links on Google. GEO (generative engine optimization) is about getting your business named and cited inside the AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews. GEO builds on SEO — it uses the same strong content and technical foundations, then adds monitoring of how often AI systems mention you.

Publish clear, factual pages that directly answer the questions your customers ask, mark them up with structured data, keep your name, address and phone number consistent everywhere, and make sure AI crawlers are allowed to read your site. AI systems tend to cite sources that state facts plainly and are corroborated across the web, so consistent information and genuine third-party mentions matter more than keyword tricks.

llms.txt is a simple text file at the root of your website that points AI systems to your most important pages and gives a short, plain-language summary of who you are and what you offer. It is an emerging, voluntary standard — not required and not guaranteed to be used by every AI system — but it is low effort to add and helps make your site easier for AI to understand.

AI agents can automate large parts of SEO — running audits, spotting content gaps, drafting briefs and first drafts, generating schema, and monitoring rankings and AI citations continuously. But a human should still review strategy, verify facts, and approve anything published. The best results come from agents doing the repetitive monitoring and drafting while a person handles judgement and quality control.
