What "agentic AI" means once you remove the marketing

A chatbot answers one question and then waits for you. An agent does not wait. It triggers on an event — a form submission, a new row, an incoming WhatsApp message — then works through several steps on its own: calling tools, reading and writing to systems, deciding what to do with the result, and reporting back only when it needs a human.
